Forty-two percent of CNU's 5,000 students are male; 58 percent are female. Students come to CNU from every region in Virginia, more than 25 other states and 38 foreign nations. Where do you fit in?
Exceptional Leadership
President Paul Trible was just 30 when first elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1977, where he served until being elected to the U.S. Senate in 1983. He was appointed president of CNU in 1996 and has been instrumental in making the University what it is today.
Top-Notch Teachers
Nearly 90 percent of CNU's esteemed faculty members hold a Ph.D. or highest degree in their fields. Our professors include Fulbright Scholars, NASA Public Service Award winners, playwrights and actors, lawyers, and business owners. Thanks to our high faculty-to-student ratio, you have a greater opportunity to connect with professors and develop mentoring relationships.
On Your Bookshelves
Countless members of our faculty share their research and expertise through written works. In 2009, Professor Sean Heuvel released Christopher Newport University, the first comprehensive look at CNU's vibrant history.
Choose Your Own Adventure
Our students participate in more than 200 clubs and organizations that include academic organizations, fraternities and sororities, and special-interest groups. From The Captain's Log to the Newport Pearls to the Ultimate Frisbee Club, you're sure to find something up your alley.
Stay Close, Drive Far
All first-, second- and third-year students live on campus. But we understand you need to get away sometimes, so even freshmen can have cars on campus - perfect for that road trip you're planning.
Getting to Know You
Incoming first-year students get acquainted with each other and the University during Setting Sail, CNU's summer orientation program. And each year during move-in weekend, you'll find President Trible, varsity athletes and leadership students helping freshmen move into their new CNU homes. Not only do you meet some of the friendly faces you'll see around campus, but it's also a load off your parents' shoulders.
Extra Syrup, President Trible
Each fall, we hold a pancake dinner the Sunday before exam week. Faculty, staff and even President and Mrs. Trible serve students pancakes, with all proceeds benefiting Toys for Tots.
Penny for Your Thoughts
It's a campus tradition to give every freshman a penny at the start of his or her CNU career. On graduation day, each student throws the same penny into the Geese Fountain on Saunders Plaza. Come continue the tradition and start new traditions of your own!
