CNU’s 260-acre campus is located in Newport News, Virginia, two and a half hours south of Washington, D.C., less than an hour from Williamsburg and Virginia Beach, and just a few blocks from where the tidal James River flows into the Chesapeake Bay. More about the region…
Student Profile
Forty-five percent of CNU’s 4,884 students are male; 55 percent are female. Students come to CNU from every region in Virginia, 25 other states, and 30 foreign nations. In Fall 2007, the average high school GPA is 3.5 (on a 4.0 scale), and the average SAT score is 1200.
History
Founded in 1960 as a two-year branch of the College of William
and Mary, CNU became independent in 1977 and gained university
status in 1991. Today, CNU is the youngest comprehensive university

Class Size
With an average class size of 24 students, CNU has much smaller
classes than most state universities. More than 90 percent of
classes are seminars, and no classes are taught by graduate
teaching assistants.
Facilities
With a $400 million building campaign nearly complete, CNU’s campus is bursting with new buildings and improvements. The impressive 116,000 sq. foot David Student Union is the hub of student activity. Other additions include a $16 million sports and convocation center, the world-class Ferguson Center for the Arts, and state-of-the-art residential facilities including CNU Village, which also houses a variety of restaurants and stores. The new Paul and Rosemary Trible Library has doubled the size of CNU's library.
Athletics
CNU athletes compete in 23 NCAA sports, including football and
cheerleading. The University ranks fifth nationally in NCAA
Division III Team Championships, and the school has produced
more than 500 All Americans.

Residence Halls
About 3,000 CNU students live on campus. Our four new residence
halls and two new apartment complexes were rated "best in the
state" by students and have won raves nationwide. Every residential
room has high-speed Internet, basic satellite cable TV, digital
local phone service, and electronic room access.
All rooms are equipped with microwave and mini-refrigerator
or have kitchen access.

Campus Safety
CNU has authorized the operation of a full-time, professionally trained police department, responsible for the safety and welfare of all members of the University community and their guests. Our University Police are committed to providing a safe and secure environment.

Newport University offers a variety of financial aid programs
to help students and their parents pay for college; 43 percent

CNU has over 100 clubs and organizations that include academic organizations,

Economic Impact
CNU is an economic force. With a $100 million operating budget,
we support 2,200 area jobs and have an annual economic impact
on the community of $112 million. Over the past seven years,
CNU construction spending amounted to nearly $400 million and
supported more than 4,000 area jobs. |
