CERTIFIED ASSISTANT ATHLETIC TRAINER

 

The Department of Athletics at Christopher Newport University is seeking applications for the full-time position of Certified Assistant Athletic Trainer.  The CNU Athletic Training Staff is made up of five ATC’s – three full-time and two graduate assistants.  The ATC fills an essential role for the Department of Athletics by maintaining a high level of communication between coaches and health care providers.  Extended hours, weekend work, and travel are expected during the competitive year, along with some heavy lifting.  Administrative, supervisory, and/or managerial responsibilities may be assigned commensurate with experience or demonstrated ability.  This individual will report directly to the Head Athletic Trainer.

 

Summary of Responsibilities:  The successful candidate will be responsible for providing athletic health care to a variety of athletic teams, possibly including football.  This individual, within the scope of his/her training and expertise, is expected to make necessary medical referrals, make daily reports to the respective head coaches, create and maintain medical records, construct and implement rehabilitation protocols, manage acute orthopedic and medical conditions with a limited amount of supervision and supervise graduate students.  This position will also assist the Head Athletic Trainer with day-to-day operations of comprehensive health care to 400 student-athletes.  Other duties as deemed necessary by the Director of Athletics may be assigned.

 

Education/Licensure Required:  A Master’s degree in sports medicine or a related field, or a Bachelor’s degree and significant and directly related work experience at a level that equates to an advanced degree; National Athletics Training Association BOC Certified and Virginia licensure eligible.

 

Qualifications Required:  Experience participating in various administrative, education, or medical support services such as coordinating arrangements for appointments and activities, participating in physical training tasks and instructions, providing first aid treatment or other related functions; skill in training or instructing student athletes in injury prevention; knowledge of general principles of preventative physical care for athletes, first aid treatment and referrals, and post injury rehabilitation; excellent interpersonal communication skills; demonstrated organizational and time management skills; ability to travel and work non-traditional hours; ability to lift heavy objects; ability to multi-task.

 

Education/Licensure Preferred:  CSCS certification.

 

Experience Preferred:  Prior experience in a college or university setting; experience with a variety of athletic teams, both male and female; athletic training experience working with a football program.
