Penalties Do In Football In 14-10 Loss At Shenandoah

WINCHESTER, VA - CNU's football team committed nine penalties while Shenandoah committed just two in the Hornets 14-10 USA South win Saturday night.

Shenandoah took the opening possession and marched 80 yards on 10 plays capped by Anthony Frates' 3-yard touchdown run to take an early 7-0 lead with 7:06 left in the first quarter.

The Captains cut the lead to 7-3 on a 23-yard field goal by Jason Broskie with 6:59 left in the first half. CNU would take the lead with 26 seconds left in the second quarter when Hudson Bryant found George Jones for a three yard touchdown pass.

The Hornets would take the lead for good with 6:19 left in the ball game when Jon Hoffman connected with Mike McVeary on a fourth and four conversion for a 24-yard touchdown pass.

The Captains had several chances to increase their lead. CNU had the ball on the Shenandoah five yard line in the third quarter. After a four yard run by Jones, the Captains had three opportunities to score from the one yard line, but the Hornets defense prevented CNU from scoring.

Roland Hilliard led the Captains on the ground with 96 yards on 16 carries. Jones finished with 53 yards on 14 rushes.

Hudson Bryant, despite missing several plays due to injuries, completed 10-of-24 passes for 89 yards and one score. Kyle Morgan saw action for the first time in his career. He finished 1-of-2 for 15 yards.

CNU is now 2-2 overall and 0-1 in the USA South. The Captains return to action next Saturday as they host Greensboro with kick-off set for 1 pm.
