Baseball Sweeps Doubleheader Over Averett NEWPORT NEWS, VA - Christopher Newport's baseball team used solid pitching and a few timely hits to take the first two games of a three-game series over Averett Saturday afternoon at Captains Park. The Captains won game one, 5-2. All five runs came in the fourth inning. Jason Moody started it all off with a single to center. John Corbin doubled down the left field line scoring Moody, after he stole second base. Trey Collier singled up the middle and advanced to second when the Cougars centerfielder misplayed the ball, which allowed Corbin to score. Brad Melton then singled to right scoring Collier, Ricky Medina reached on a fielder's choice, forcing Melton out at second. Charlie Hardie doubled to left center sending Medina to third. Medina and Hardie scored on Michael Fawley's double to left. Averett tagged starter Mike Cosby for two runs in the second. Cosby pitched a complete game (7 innings), allowed five hits, walked none and struck out nine to pick up his fourth win of the year. Fawley finished 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs. Moody finished 2-for-3 and Corbin, Collier and Melton each added one hit in the win. In game two, the Captains won 7-1. CNU scored once in the first and fourth innings and scored twice in the second and three in the sixth for the win. The Cougars lone run came in the second inning. Moody finished 2-for-4 with three RBIs, Hardie was 1-for-3 with two runs driven in and Rob Quinn, Jayson Basanes, Collier and Melton each finished with one hit. Corbin's hitting streak of 17 games came to an end in game two as they junior first baseman finished 0-for-4. Steven Mingee started and went five innings to pick up his second win of the year. Mingee allowed one run on six hits while walking three and striking out two. Bryan Coffey pitched the final four innings for his second save. The junior hurler allowed just two hits while walking one and striking out four. The Captains improve to 15-10 overall and 4-4 in the USA South. Averett falls to 6-18 overall and 1-10 in conference play. These two teams will play again Sunday at Captains Park. First pitch is set for 1 pm. |
