Women's Lacrosse Captures USA South Regular Season Crown, Drops Methodist, 16-4

FAYETTEVILLE, NC - Christopher Newport's women's lacrosse squad defeated Methodist 16-4 Saturday and captured the regular season USA South title and a bye into the semifinals of the USA South Conference Tournament.

The Lady Captains quickly jumped out to a 3-0 lead just seven minutes into the start of the match. The Monarchs scored with 20:25 remaining in the opening half and CNU countered by scoring the next 10 goals to take a 13-1 lead with 23:12 left in the game.

CNU out-scored Methodist by a total of 5-3 in the second half.

Bonnie Hansen led the Lady Captains with four goals and three assists. Kristen Conques finished with four goals and two assists. Lisa Thomson added three scores.

Katie Doherty, Brooke Falck and Christine Mike each added one goal and one assist. Shayna Sargent and Natalie Gilbert all had one goal each. Kristyn Hankins finished with one assist.

Christopher Newprt out-shot Methodist, 32-11. Theresa Sparks played the first half in goal and had one save while Gayle Robinson played the second half and made three saves.

The Lady Captains are the No. 1 seed in the USA South Conference Tournament. Quarterfinals begin Tuesday, April 10 at the home of the higher seeds. The semifinals and finals will be played in Burlington, NC once again this year.

Christopher Newport (8-4, 6-0) returns to action Tuesday as they host VA Wesleyan with start time set for 4 pm.
