Women's Lacrosse Upends Cross-Water Rival VA Wesleyan, 15-10

NEWPORT NEWS, VA - Christopher Newport's women's lacrosse squad heads into next week's USA South Tournament on a positive note as they defeated cross-water rival VA Wesleyan 15-10 at Captains Field on Tuesday.

The two teams played even for the first 15 minutes of the opening half until the Lady Captains scored six straight to take an 8-2 lead with 7:03 left in the half. Christopher Newport led 9-3 at the break.

In the second half the two teams played fairly even, with the Marlins out-scoring CNU, 7-6.

Kristen Conques and Bonnie Hansen each finished with four goals and two assists. Kristyn Hankins contributed three goals and three helpers. Christine Mike had one goal and one assist while Shayna Sargent, Holli Sawyer, Brooke Falck each contributed one score. Katie Doherty had one assist in the win.

Christopher Newport out-shot the Marlins, 29-25. Theresa Sparks started and played the first 50 minutes in goal, making eight saves. Gayle Robinson closed it out and had five saves in net.

CNU heads into the USA South Conference Tournament as the No. 1 seed. CNU will play the winner of the No. 4/No. 5 game next Saturday at 1 pm in Burlington, NC. The Lady Captains are now 9-4.
