Softball Splits A Pair With No. 17 Methodist

NEWPORT NEWS, VA - Christopher Newport's softball team split a pair of games with 17th-ranked Methodist Tuesday afternoon at Captains Field.

The Lady Captains took the opener, 4-3, and the Monarchs won the nightcap, 8-2.

CNU's Janet Fairchild improved to 2-0 by pitching 6 2/3 innings in game one and allowing three runs on five hits. Margit Severin and Mia Johnson each knocked in two runs for the Lady Captains, and Melanie Hose and Johnson each had two hits for the Lady Captains.

Methodist scored all three of its runs in the top of the seventh, and Kristen Rowe relieved Fairchild to pick up her first save of the season. Megan Hutson was 3-for-3 for Methodist in game one.

In the second game of the doubleheader, the Monarchs used three home runs to earn a split. Methodist scored four times in the top of the first inning, three coming on a blast off the bat of Candace Hudgins. Sara Poling later hit a solo shot, and Megan Hutson added a two-run homer as the Monarchs pulled away. Hutson ended up 4-for-5 in the twin bill with three runs batted in for the Monarchs. Lesley Hewitt went the distance in the second game for Methodist to go to 2-0 on the year.

CNU is now 5-1 on the season and 3-1 in USA South play. Methodist is 3-1 overall and 1-1 in conference action.

The Lady Captains return to action on Friday in Virginia Beach at the Atlantic vs. East Challenge.
