Softball Sweeps Polytechnic

NEWPORT NEWS, VA - Christopher Newport's softball squad swept a pair of games from Polytechnic (NY) Sunday afternoon at Captains Park.

The Lady Captains won game one by a score of 6-5. CNU scored two runs in the first, third and fourth innings. The Blue Jays, who trailed 6-0 after four, scored twice in the fifth and added three more in the top of the sixth.

Lauren Pleveich led the CNU offensive attack going 3-for-4 with three RBI. Mia Johnson finished 1-for-3 with two RBI. Mary Kennedy, Katie Moyers, Margit Severin, Audra Underwood, Danielle Steele and Megan England each finished with one hit in the win.

Sarah Tipton tossed 5 2/3 innings, allowing five runs, two earned on four hits. She walked five and struck out two to pick up the win. Kristen Rowe pitched the final 1 1/3 innings striking out two to pick up the save.

CNU won game two by a score of 11-1.

Pleveich got the Lady Captains on the board first with a two RBI single. Mia Johnson followed with a two-out RBI double to give CNU a 3-0 lead after one inning of play.

The Lady Captains would tack on two more in the third and six in the bottom of the fourth.

Pleveich led the way once again going 3-for-3 with four RBI and two runs score. Johnson was 2-for-2 with two RBI and two runs scored while Moyers finished 2-for-3 with two runs scored.

Lindsay Kelly picked up the win tossing five innings. She allowed one run on two hits, walked four and struck out six.

Polytechnic falls to 0-6 overall while CNU improves to 11-1. The Lady Captains return to action Wednesday as they host cross-water rival VA Wesleyan at 2 pm.
