Softball Swept By Salisbury
NEWPORT NEWS, VA - Christopher Newport's softball squad dropped a pair of games at home to Salisbury Tuesday afternoon.
The Lady Captains dropped game one by a score of 13-12 in eight innings. The Sea Gulls scored three runs in the top of the first but CNU bounced right back with five runs in the bottom of the inning.
The two teams traded single runs in the second and Christopher Newport scored once in the bottom of the third to lead 7-4. Salisbury countered with four runs in the top of the fourth but the Lady Captains tied the score at 8-8 in the bottom of the inning. SU added three more in the top of the fifth but CNU would not go away as they scored twice more in the bottom of the inning to trail 11-10.
The Sea Gulls scored one more in the top of the sixth but Christopher Newport plated two runs to tie the score at 12-12. Each team went scoreless in the seventh, but Salisbury pushed a run across in the eighth to take a 13-12 lead. CNU had a runner on third with one out in the bottom of the eighth, but the runner was thrown out at the plate. With two outs, the Lady Captains loaded the bases, but SU induced a ground out to end the game.
Katie Moyers finished 3-for-6 with two RBI and two runs scored. Lauren Pleveich was 3-for-5 with three RBI, Renee Ashworth went 3-for-5 with a home run, two RBI and two runs, Melanie Hose was 3-for-4 and Margit Severin finished 2-for-3 with two RBI.
In game two, Salisbury scored once in the first and four more in the second to lead 5-0. CNU plated two in the third and three more in the fourth to knot the score at 5-5. The Sea Gulls pushed across five runs in the sixth for the final margin.
Moyers was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and Severin was 1-for-3 with two RBI. Pleveich finished 2-for-3.
Salisbury is now 10-4 on the year while CNU falls to 15-5. The Lady Captains return to action Sunday as they travel to Bridgewater with first pitch set for 2 pm.
