Softball Drops A Pair Of Games On Day Two Of USA South Tournament

BURLINGTON, NC - Christopher Newport's softball team lost a pair of games and were eliminated from the USA South Conference Tournament Saturday afternoon.

The Lady Captains lost its first game of the day 9-5 to Methodist.

Each team scored three times in the opening inning. CNU scored twice in the third to lead 5-3. The Monarch responded with three in the fourth, two more in the fifth and one more in the sixth for the final margin.

Katie Moyers, Margit Severin and Kristin Nickloy each finished 2-for-4. Jamie Jansen was 2-for-3 with a RBI and run scored.

Janet Fairchild tossed 2 2/3 innings to pick up a no-decision. She allowed four runs, one earned, on two hits. Kristen Rowe tossed 4 1/3 innings to pick up the loss. The freshman allowed five runs on 10 hits.

In game two, the Lady Captains were eliminated by Shenandoah by a score of 8-6 in eight innings.

SU's Alicia Sanders knocked in the winning runs with a triple in the eighth inning.

The Hornets pushed across three in the top of the first and CNU countered with one run in the bottom of the inning.

The Lady Captains plated three in the bottom of the third to take the lead, 4-3. Shenandoah scored three more times in the fifth while CNU added two more in the bottom half to tie the score at 6-6 setting up extra innings.

Mary Kennedy was 3-for-4 with three runs scored. Severin finished 2-for-4 with two RBI, Nickloy was also 2-for-4 and Lauren Pleveich went 2-for-3.

Kristen Bruce went the distance, allowing eight runs, seven earned, on 11 hits and striking out seven. She's now 11-3 on the year.

Nickloy, Megan Morris, and Katie Moyers were all named to the All-Tournament Team.

Christopher Newport is now 33-8 on the year.
