Softball Downs Top Seeded Methodist, Falls To Ferrum In Championship

RALEIGH, NC - CNU's softball team defeated top seeded Methodist in an elimination game but lost to Ferrum in the championship of the USA South Conference Tournament.

The Lady Captains started Sunday off with a bang, defeating the conference's regular season champion, Methodist, 2-1, scoring the game-winner in the bottom of the seventh inning.

The Lady Monarchs took the lead in thet top of the fifth, 1-0, but CNU roared back to tie it in the bottom of the inning. Hannah Brown led off with a single, after a Nicole Gray flyout, Brown advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Tricia Sexauer. C.J. McQueen followed with a RBI single to center, scoring Brown to tie the game.

In the seventh, McQueen doubled with one out, Melanie Hose followed with a flyout to center, Becky Bond then came up and grounded a pitch to shortstop and the throw to first was wide and McQueen came all the way around to score the game-winner.

Janet Fairchild pitched a complete-game to pick up her seventh win of the year. She allowed one run on three hits, walked three and struck out four.

McQueen was 2-for-4 with a RBI and a run scored, Brown, Susan Ishman and Margit Severin added one hit each.

The win put CNU in the championship game, needing to beat Ferrum twice to win the conference title. The Lady Captains lost to the Lady Panthers, 5-2.

FC scored first in the top of the first inning, but the Lady Captains tied the score in the bottom of the inning. McQueen led off with a walk, Hose singled putting runners on first and second. McQueen would score on Bond's RBI single to tie the score.

CNU would take the lead 2-1 in the bottom of the second, with one out, Gray reached on an error and Sexauer would follow with a single scoring Gray on an error.

Ferrum would score once in the fourth and sixth innings and add two more in the seventh to capture the crown.

Michelle Kass-Prewitt pitched the first four innings allowing two runs on six hits, walked none and struck out two. Fairchild took the loss in relief, tossing three innings, allowing three runs on four hits, walked one and struck out none.

Hose and Bond eached finished 2-for-4, McQueen, Andrea Rohde, Gray and Sexauer added one hit each.

McQueen, Ishman and Bond were all named to the All-Tournament Team.

The Lady Captains season concludes with a record of 24-18.
