Women's Basketball Scores A Season-High 93 Points In A 93-40 Win Over NC Wesleyan, Captures 500th Program Win

NEWPORT NEWS, VA - Christopher Newport's women's basketball squad scored a season-high 93 and shot a season-best 59% from the field in the Lady Captains 93-40 win over NC Wesleyan Tuesday evening.

The win was also the 500th win in CNU women's basketball history.

The Lady Captains led 16-12 with 12:03 left in the opening half and finished out the first stanza on a 35-3 run to take a 51-15 lead into the locker room at halftime.

CNU was 21-of-37 (57%) from the field, 1-of-2 from behind the arc and 8-of-9 (89%) from the line. The Bishops were just 5-of-23 (22%) from the floor, 0-of-3 from long range and 5-of-8 (63%) from the free throw line.

The Lady Captains out-rebounded NC Wesleyan in the first half, 29-8 and forced 13 first half turnovers.

The second half belonged to the Lady Captains as well, as they outscored the Bishops 42-25. NC Wesleyan finished the half 9-of-22 (41%) from the floor, 1-of-2 from behind the arc and 6-of-8 from the line. CNU was on fire, finishing 19-of-31 (61%) from the field, 0-of-1 from long range and 4-of-6 from the line.

For the game, the Bishops were 14-of-45 (31%) from the field, 1-of-5 (20%) on three-pointers and 11-of-16 (69%) from the charity stripe. Christopher Newport finished 40-of-68 (59%) from the floor, 1-of-3 from downtown and 12-of-15 (80%) from the line.

CNU out-rebounded NC Wesleyan, 49-16. The Lady Captains had 30 points off of 25 NC Wesleyan turnovers. CNU also dominated in the paint, outscoring the Bishops, 58-20.

Courtney Brown led the Bishops with 8 points.

Five CNU players finished in double figures led by Nikki Rowland's 16 points, five assists and six steals. Alicia Bessey finished with a season-high 15 points, Candace Bryant added 14 points and 11 boards, Shantel Burwell had 11 points and Colandra Rollins contributed 11 points and seven rebounds.

NC Wesleyan falls to 4-6 overall and 1-2 in conference play. The Lady Captains improve to 8-6 overall and 2-1 in the USA South. CNU returns to action Saturday as they host Ferrum at 2 pm.
