Women's Basketball Drops Averett, 84-56
NEWPORT NEWS, VA - Christopher Newport's women's basketball team won its fourth consecutive game Tuesday evening dispatching Averett 84-56 in a USA South contest.
Averett led early, 13-12, after a Jasmine Adams three-pointer with 14:01 left to play in the opening half. CNU came right back down the floor and re-took the lead on Samantha Davis' jumper just 26 seconds later, a lead the Lady Captains would not relinquish.
After Davis' bucket, CNU went on a 21-7 run capped by two Candace Bryant free throws with 5:15 left in the first. The Lady Captains largest lead in the opening stanza was 18, a number matched several times, including the halftime score, 47-29.
Christopher Newport quickly increased its lead to 24 points in the first six minutes of the second half. Two more free throws by Candace Bryant with 14:30 left put the Lady Captains ahead, 59-35. The largest lead CNU would enjoy came late in the game when they led by 30 points twice, the final time coming with 39 seconds left. AU's Darcie Jones' lay-up with 23 seconds left provided the final margin.
Averett was limited to just 18-of-68 (27%) shooting from the field, including just 2-of-11 (18%) from behind the arc and 18-of-26 (69%) from the free throw line. The Lady Captains finished 27-of-55 (49%) from the floor, 2-of-6 (33%) from long range and 28-of-31 (90%) from the charity stripe.
Adams led the Cougars with 15 points and five rebounds. Kristen Kozar and Darcie Jones each finished with nine points.
Alicia Bessey led the way for Christopher Newport with 17 points and nine rebounds coming off the bench. Candace Bryant added 16 points and nine rebounds, Colandra Rollins had 14 points and seven boards while Samantha Davis finished with 13 points. Shantel Burwell finished with 11.
Averett falls to 1-12 overall and 0-5 in conference action. CNU improves to 10-6 overall and 4-1 in the USA South. For Christopher Newport, its the 28th straight season of winning at least 10 games.
CNU hits the road this weekend as they travel to Methodist on Saturday and Greensboro on Sunday. Both games tip at 2 pm.
