Women's Basketball Drops 88-75 Decision At Ferrum
FERRUM, VA - Christopher Newport's women's basketball team let a 10-point halftime lead slip away as Ferrum came from behind for an 88-75 win Sunday afternoon.
The Lady Captains led at the break, 40-30. CNU shot very well in the opening stanza, finishing 16-of-31 (52%) from the floor, 1-of-2 from behind the arc and 7-of-8 (88%) from the charity stripe. The Panthers however were just 8-of-30 (27%) from the field, including 4-of-13 (31%) from behind the arc and 10-of-13 (77%) from the line.
Ferrum began the half on a 21-11 run to tie the score at 51-51 with 11:14 to play on Miranda Carrasco's three-pointer up top. With the score tied, the Panthers took advantage of another CNU scoring drought and went on another scoring run, this time Ferrum outscored the Lady Captains 18-4 over the next five minutes to take a 14-point lead.
CNU would come alive and cut the lead to as few as five as they countered with a 13-4 run to trail 73-68 with 3:24 left to play. Any attempt to cut into the lead further was thwarted by Ferrum.
The Panthers came alive in the second half as momentum switched to their side. FC was 15-of-24 (63%) from the field, 4-of-7 (57%) from long range and 24-of-29 (83%) from the line in the second half.
For the game, the Panthers finished 23-of-54 (43%) from the floor, 8-of-20 (40%) from behind the arc and finished 34-of-42 (81%) from the free throw line.
The Lady Captains, after shooting just 33% in the second half, finished the game 26-of-61 (43%) from the field, 3-of-7 (43%) from downtown and 20-of-22 (91%) from the free throw line.
Shanita Bennett led the Panthers with 19 points on 4-of-8 shooting, including 2-of-4 from behind the arc. She was also 9-of-11 from the free throw line. Ali Davenport finished with 15 points and seven rebounds off the bench, Quanita Bennett had 14, Ashley Norton and Carrasco finished with 12 each.
Dee Luck led CNU with 18 points (16 in the first half), seven rebounds and five blocks. Nikki Rowland finished with 16 points.
Ferrum improves to 17-6 overall and 10-2 in the USA South. The Lady Captains fall to 15-8 overall and 9-3 in conference play. CNU returns to action next Friday as they host Methodist with tip set for 5:30 pm.
