Women's Basketball Downs Greensboro, Captures No. 2 Seed At USA South Tourny

NEWPORT NEWS, VA - Christopher Newport's women's basketball squad defeated Greensboro 90-58 Saturday afternoon and captured the No. 2 seed at next week's USA South Conference Tournament that starts Tuesday.

The Lady Captains will take on No. 7 Averett at 5:30 in the quarterfinals of the USA South Conference Tournament on Tuesday.

CNU dominated from the get-go, leading by as many as 17 in the first half. The Lady Captains took a 51-36 lead into the locker room at halftime. Christopher Newport shot 54% from the field and 86% from behind the arc. CNU held the Pride to just 36% shooting from the floor and 25% shooting from behind the arc.

The second half belonged to the Lady Captains as they extended their lead to as many as 32, which came late in the final stanza.

CNU finished the game 25-of-64 (55%) from the field and improves to 8-0 on the year when they hit at least half of their shots. From behind the arc, they finished 7-of-8 (88%) and 13-of-21 (62%) from the line. GC was limited to just 21-of-64 (33%) shooting, 4-of-16 (25%) from downtown and 12-of-17 (71%) from the free throw line.

Staci Humphrey paced Greensboro with 18 points and six assists. Bobbie Barnes added 13 and Jamie Motsinger finished with 10.

Nikki Rowland led the CNU attack with 21 points, 16 in the first half, on 8-of-13 shooting, including 4-of-5 from behind the arc. She also had six assists. Alicia Bessey finished with 16 points off the bench, Samantha Davis had 12 to go along with five rebounds and five assists, Colandra Rollins contributed 10 points and seven boards while Dee Luck had 10 points, eight rebounds and eight blocks.

Greensboro, the tournament's No. 3 seed, falls to 17-8 overall and 10-4 in conference play. GC will host No. 6 Peace at 5:30 pm. Christopher Newport improves 17-8 on the year and 11-3 in the USA South.
