Women's Basketball Advances To Semifinals Of USA South Conference Tournament, Defeat Averett 61-50
NEWPORT NEWS, VA - Christopher Newport's women's basketball team advanced to the semifinals of the USA South Conference Tournament by defeating Averett 61-50 Tuesday evening in a quarterfinal match.
The Lady Captains had a solid first half, taking a 44-24 lead into the locker room at halftime. CNU was 20-of-39 (51%) from the field in the opening stanza. The Lady Captains also hit four of their five free throw attempts.
CNU limited the Cougars to just 7-of-31 (23%) shooting in the half and 1-of-6 (17%) from behind the arc.
In the second half, neither team could find its stride shooting. Averett was limited to just six field goals on 23 attempts. Christopher Newport was limited to just seven field goals on 25 attempts. 14 of the Cougars 26 points came from the free throw line.
Averett held the Lady Captains scoreless over the final 9:41 of the second half.
For the game, AU was 13-of-54 (24%) from the field, 1-of-9 (11%) on three-pointers and 23-of-28 (82%) from the stripe. Christopher Newport was 27-of-64 (42%) from the floor, 1-of-5 (20%) from behind the arc and 6-of-7 (86%) from the line.
AU was led by Tiffany Deloatch's 17 points and seven rebounds.
Dee Luck paced CNU with 13 points, seven rebounds and six blocks. Nikki Rowland added 11 points and eight rebounds.
Averett finishes the season 5-19 overall while the Lady Captains improve to 18-8. CNU will take on Greensboro in a semifinal contest set to start at 6 pm on Friday in the Freeman Center. GC was an 84-79 winner over Peace.
