Women's Basketball Falls To St. Mary's, 73-67

ST. MARY'S CITY, MD - Christopher Newport's women's basketball team dropped a 73-67 decision to St. Mary's in the championship of the St. Mary's Tournament Saturday night.

The Lady Captains led by as many as nine in the first half, 14-5, on Candace Bryant's lay-up with 15:59 left in the opening half. The Seahawks whittled away at the lead and eventually took its first lead in the contest, 26-25, with 5:29 left in the first on Allie Scott's three-pointer.

CNU battled back to tie the score at 30-30 with 1:49 left in the half on Dee Luck's jumper in the paint. St. Mary's led by as many as six, 37-31, with six seconds left but Michele Russell's jumper at the buzzer cut the lead to four, 37-33.

CNU was 11-of-24 (46%) from the field in the opening half, 3-of-7 (43%) behind the arc and 8-of-12 (67%) from the free throw line. St. Mary's finished 12-of-33 (36%) from the floor, 1-of-5 on three's but finished 12-of-15 (80%) from the charity stripe.

In the second half, the Lady Captains went on an 11-2 run to begin the half to lead 44-39 on two free throws by Samantha Davis with 17:03. The Seahawks would not go away and went on a run of their own and out scored CNU 18-4 over the next six minutes to lead 57-51 on another Scott three-pointer.

The Lady Captains would fight back to take the lead, 63-62, on Candace Bryant's bucket with 3:58 left in the half. But St. Mary's proved to be too tough as the Seahawks managed to get Nikki Rowland and Shantel Burwell to foul out. St. Mary's finished the game on an 11-4 run.

CNU was just 13-of-36 (36%) from the floor in the second half and finished the game 24-of-60 (40%) from the field. The Lady Captains were 2-of-11 (18%) from beyond the arc in the second half and was 5-of-18 (28%) for the game. From the line, CNU was a perfect 6-of-6 in the second half and finished 14-of-18 (78%) for the game.

St. Mary's was 11-of-24 (46%) from the field in the second half and finished 23-of-57 (40%). The Seahawks were 3-of-4 from behind the arc in the second half and finished 4-of-9 (44%). At the stripe, St. Mary's was 11-of-21 (52%) in the second half and finished 23-of-36 (64%) for the game.

The Seahawks were led by Scott with 29 points and six rebounds. She was 8-of-17 from the field and 11-of-14 from the free throw line. She was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player. Megan Oglik added 17 points off the bench.

Christopher Newport was led by Bryant's 18 points and eight rebounds. She was named to the All-Tournament Team. Davis contributed 18 points and seven assists while Rowland added 13 points.

CNU drops to 1-1 on the year while the Seahawks improve to 2-0. The Lady Captains return to action Tuesday as they host cross-water rival VA Wesleyan with tip set for 7 pm.
