Women's Basketball Runs Past Mary Baldwin, 84-64

NEWPORT NEWS, VA - Christopher Newport's women's basketball team dropped Mary Baldwin 84-64 Saturday evening in the Freeman Center.

The Lady Captains scored the first 10 points of the game and eventually led by as many as 16, 19-3, with 12:26 left on Michele Russell's jumper. The Squirrels would not go quietly, as they battled back to cut the lead down to three, 38-35, at the break.

In the second half, CNU came out firing on all cylinders as they hit on 17-of-31 (55%) from the floor, 2-of-5 from behind the arc and 10-of-15 from the line. The Lady Captains led by three, 42-39, with 17:24 to go in the game when they went on a burst and outscored Mary Baldwin 24-11 over the next 9:30 to take a 66-50 lead on Samantha Davis' jumper in the paint.

CNU would lead by as many as 21 late in the game before the Squirrels cut the lead to 20 on a free throw with 23 seconds to go.

The Lady Captains held Mary Baldwin to just 22-of-68 (32%) shooting from the field, 2-of-14 (14%) from behind the arc and 18-of-34 (53%) from the line. CNU, on the other hand, finished the game shooting 51% (34-of-67) from the floor, 5-of-11 (46%) from long range and 11-of-17 (65%) from the stripe.

The Squirrels were paced by Jessica Carter's 17 points. Erica Dabney added 14 points and eight rebounds while Kara Hawkins contributed 12 boards.

For CNU, Nikki Rowland led the Lady Captains with a career-high 27 points on 9-of-15 shooting, including 5-of-7 from behind the arc and a perfect 4-of-4 from the free throw line. She also added six rebounds and seven assists. Davis had 15 points, seven rebounds and six assists, Candace Bryant finished with her first double-double of the year with 12 points and 12 rebounds. Dee Luck added 10 points, 10 rebounds and a season-high six blocks.

Christopher Newport improves to 3-2 on the year while Mary Baldwin drops to 2-4. CNU returns to action Dec. 9 when they travel to Hood (MD) with tip-off set for 3 pm.
