MEN’S BASKETBALL DOWNS FERRUM 70-59, WOOLLUM EARNS 400TH CAREER WIN

 

FERRUM, VA – CNU’s men’s basketball team defeated Ferrum Saturday night 70-59 giving Head Coach CJ Woollum his 400th career win as head coach at Christopher Newport.

The Captains did not shoot extremely well from the floor for the game but did force 20 Panther turnovers.  CNU led by three, 32-29, at halftime on just 10-of-35 (29%) shooting from the floor, 5-of-16 (31%) on three-pointers and 7-of-11 (64%) from the free throw line.  Ferrum was a little bit more effective in the first half, 9-of-25 (36%) from the field, 2-of-4 (50%) on three’s and 9-of-10 (90%) from the charity stripe.

The second half saw the Captains build their lead to double digits but saw Ferrum claw its way back into the game and cut the lead to single digits.  CNU hit its free throws in the final seconds of the game to assure the victory. 

Ferrum was 10-of-28 (36%) from the field in the second half, 2-of-8 (25%) on three’s and 8-of-12 (67%) from the free throw line.  The Captains were 12-of-28 (43%) from the floor, 6-of-11 (55%) on three’s and 8-of-10 (80%) from the free throw line. 

For the game, the Panthers finished 19-of-53 (36%) from the field, 4-of-12 (33%) on three’s and 17-of-22 (77%) from the free throw line.  CNU finished 22-of-63 (35%) from the field, 11-of-27 (41%) on three’s and 15-of-21 (71%) from the charity stripe.

The Panthers were led by Kendrick Holley with 17 points and six rebounds.  Kevin Aigbe added 14 points and six assists.

CNU was led by Jeremy Romeo with a career high 26 points.  Romeo finished 9-of-16 from the field including 5-of-8 on three’s.  Blake Brookman finished with 16 points and Jordan Short added 10 points.

Ferrum drops to 7-8 overall and 1-3 in the USA South.  The Captains are now 9-6 overall and 3-1 in the USA South.

CNU returns to action Sunday as they travel to Averett with tip-off set for 4 pm.
