WOMEN’S SOCCER ADVANCES IN DIXIE TOURNAMENT WITH PENALTY KICK SHOOTOUT WIN OVER METHODIST

  NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The CNU women’s soccer team had to go into a penalty kick shootout to defeat Methodist and advance to the Dixie Conference Tournament championship game Saturday against N.C. Wesleyan in  a game played at Captains Field Tuesday night.

  After battling to a 0-0 tie after regulation play and two 15 minute overtimes, CNU won the penalty kick shootout, 3-1. CNU had dominated the contest, outshooting the Monarchs, 14-1.

  But in the shootout Methodist had taken a 1-0 lead after the first two of a mandatory five shots. Amy Petko then tallied for CNU in the third round and when Tiffany Swiney stoppedKelly Patterson’s try the count was even at 1-1 after three rounds.

  Rosie Russo converted on CNU’s fourth shot and Swiney came up big again against Beth Gray to give CNU a 2-1 edge. That gave Laura McFerrin the opportunity to win it for Cnu which she did sending the lady Captains into the championship game at N.C. Wesleyan Saturday. The Bishops were a 5-0 winner over Ferrum Tuesday.

  The game officially goes in the record as a tie for the two teams leaving CNU with an 11-3-1 record and Methodist at 10-7-2.
