Dr. Bob Colvin serves as Dean of the College of Social Sciences at Christopher Newport University (CNU). The College includes the Luter School of Business and the departments of Communication, Economics, Government, Leadership and American Studies, Military Science, and Sociology, Social Work, and Anthropology.

Bob served five years as the founding chair of the Department of Leadership and American Studies, and taught values-based leadership, leadership research and theory, and foundations of leadership studies. He previously taught for seven years in CNU’s Department of Government.

Bob’s doctoral dissertation focused on the leadership practices of 4, 454 executives and his publications are in the fields of leadership studies and public administration. He holds an MBA degree and a B.S. in Business.

In Virginia, Bob has worked at the cabinet level in state government, headed an agency of the Virginia General Assembly, and headed two executive branch organizations in state government. In the largest organization, he was responsible for a billion dollar annual budget and more than 5,000 employees. In addition, Bob co-founded a successful employee benefit services company in 1995, located in Richmond, Virginia, that grew substantially and gained the reputation as the regional quality leader in its field and was purchased by a national firm in 2006. In an earlier business undertaking, Bob represented clients as a registered lobbyist.

Early in his career, he spent ten years as a police officer, and before that was a radio disc jockey. He is an FAA licensed pilot whose other hobbies include riding his touring motorcycle and target shooting (usually not at the same time), and spending time with his family.
