Chairman Gordon L. Gentry, Jr., began his banking career on the Virginia Peninsula by joining with the Bank of Warwick (which later became part of the Bank of Virginia). He advanced through various bank departments to become President of the Peninsula Division of the Bank of Virginia (the predecessor to Signet Bank) in 1976, a position he held until 1980 when he was appointed Regional Retail Executive Officer for the Eastern Division of Signet Bank (now Wells Fargo). In 1989, Mr. Gentry joined TideMark Bank as President and Chief Executive Officer and subsequently became Chairman of the Board of TideMark Bank, a position he held until the acquisition of TideMark Bank by Crestar Financial (now SunTrust) in March 1995. In 1996, Mr. Gentry became the founding Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Harbor Bank, the first new commercial bank to be established on the Virginia Peninsula in over 25 years. Harbor Bank enjoyed success from the beginning and, in 2004, merged with TowneBank (headquartered in Portsmouth, Virginia) to form the largest community bank in Hampton Roads. Today, Mr. Gentry serves as the Chairman of TowneBank – Peninsula. In 1993, Mr. Gentry received “CEO of the Year Award” from Financial World for thrift institutions with $100 to $500 million in assets. Along with other community and professional involvements, he has been President of Hampton Roads Jaycees, President of the Virginia Peninsula Chamber of Commerce, President of the Peninsula Chapter of American Institute of Banking, President and Campaign Chairman of the United Way of the Virginia Peninsula, Chairman of the Peninsula Port Authority, Chairman of the Industrial Development Authority for the city of Newport News, President of the Virginia International Terminals, Vice-Rector of Christopher Newport University (CNU), Chairman of the Board of Advisors for the School of Business of CNU, President of Newport News NOW, President of Newport News Educational Foundation, President of Sarah Bonwell Hudgins Foundation, Chairman of Achievable Dream, Inc., and a founder of People-to-People. He has served three terms on the Board of Virginia Bankers Association, was the 1993-94 President of the Virginia League of Savings Institutions, and 2002-03 President of the Virginia Bankers Association. He served 2 terms on the Community Bank Council of American Bankers Association. Mr. Gentry is a Colonel (Ret.) in the United States Army Reserve. Today, Mr. Gentry continues to serve on numerous boards, commissions, and foundations including TowneBank, Corvesta, Inc., Delta Dental of Virginia, Hampton University, Greater Peninsula NOW, Hampton Roads Alliance for Economic Development, People-to-People, Riverside Health System, An Achievable Dream Foundation, Virginia Peninsula Community Foundation, Bernadine Franciscan Sisters Foundation, Virginia
