It is my pleasure to welcome you to CNU and the Luter School of Business.

The decision to pursue a business degree will be one of the most important investments you will make in your life.  Where you choose to study will have an enormous impact on the return that you will have on your investment. CNU is a young university that has quickly established itself as a preeminent liberal arts institution.  This youth and enthusiasm is at the core of our business program.  Through faculty interaction, student organizations and outreach experiences you will create and stretch your intellectual and personal growth and development which will provide you the resources and tools necessary to lead a life of significance.

We are a liberal arts program that embraces diversity and individual learning both in and out of the classroom.  Our faculty are from many of the top business and liberal arts colleges and universities in the nation.  And along with our Board of Advisors and we strongly believe that a comprehensive business education which develops both technical knowledge and professional development, our programs provide the important skills necessary for successful endeavors in business or graduate school.

The Luter School Board of Advisors is an active part of the business curriculum.  Comprised of local and regional executives and business owners, our board provides numerous mentorship and internship opportunities for our junior and senior classmen.  Furthermore, our BSBA majors offer mentorship opportunities for our freshman and sophomore students who are interested in our program.

Through our academic and professional mentoring opportunities, many of our students go on to careers in regional, national and Fortune 500 companies.  Others go on to graduate programs to further their studies.

Lastly, we are accredited by AACSB International.  This distinction is granted to less than 5% of all business schools worldwide.  We earned and maintained our accreditation based on our philosophy that we seek to develop students intellectually, professionally, and personally through a rigorous program that will distinguish them as critical thinkers, articulate communicators, and ethical business leaders.

In closing, we invite you to experience the “CNU difference” and to take on the challenge of engaging in our rigorous academic curriculum and vibrant intellectual community.

Best regards,

THE VISION AND MISSION OF THE LUTER SCHOOL OF BUSINESS

Our vision is to be a preeminent public liberal arts based undergraduate business program and to serve a diverse population of high achieving students.

Our mission is to educate and prepare students for successful careers in business and service to society. We seek to develop students intellectually, professionally, and personally through a rigorous program that will distinguish them as critical thinkers, articulate communicators, and ethical business leaders.  The Luter School enrolls a highly selective student body from Virginia and the Mid-Atlantic region. Students develop multi-disciplinary competencies and specialized skills necessary to excel in prestigious graduate programs and the global economy. The faculty provides high-quality, student-centered instruction that both challenges and inspires students. The faculty produces peer-reviewed, discipline-based, applied and pedagogical research and other intellectual contributions to their respective fields. The Luter School actively engages with private and public sectors to provide leadership, learning, and service opportunities. Quality is assured by maintenance of accreditation with AACSB International.

LUTER SCHOOL ACCREDITATION WITH AACSB INTERNATIONAL

The Luter School is one of only 47 AACSB accreditated institutions in the world with an undergraduate-only program in business which represents 8 percent of all AACSB accredited members.  The program was initially accredited in 2005 and is up for reaffirmation in fall 2015.

Less than 5% of the world’s business schools have achieved AACSB International accreditation.  Employers look for applicants from high-quality, AACSB accredited schools and sometimes only reimburse employee tuition from these schools for both undergraduate and graduate courses.  Business degrees from AACSB accredited schools are recognized by universities all over the world.

QUALITY OF FACULTY

In the Luter Business School  96% of our faculty are either professionally or academically qualified and 82% of our regular full-time faculty have a terminal or doctoral degrees in their field of teaching.  Our faculty earned doctoral degrees at leading universities across the country including the University of Alabama, Carnegie-Mellon University, Case Western Reserve University, Clemson University, University of Connecticut, University of Florida, George Mason University, Indiana University, Kent State University, University of Missouri, Purdue University, Rutgers University, University of Southern California, Texas A&M University, Virginia Commonwealth University, Virginia Polytechnic and State University, College of William & Mary, and Washington University.

THE LUTER EDUCATIONAL EXPERIENCE

The Luter School stresses four elements of business education: perspectives, knowledge, and skills. The first is grounded in the liberal arts traditions of the University and builds on the Liberal Learning Foundations, Areas of Inquiry and the Liberal Learning Emphasis taken by all of our students. It is built on the premise that an effective business leader will develop a deep understanding of the cultural, social, political, economic, international, scientific and technical environments in which individuals and organizations exist. This helps our students develop their own internalized value systems and prepares them to apply these values broadly throughout their lives. It also enables them to place business decisions in a larger context, developing an understanding of the potential impact of business actions more broadly in society. We believe that a liberal education is a necessary part of a professional education, and our curriculum is structured on this premise.

THE BUSINESS CORE IN THE BSBA PROGRAM

The Luter School builds on the foundational educational experience provided by the business core courses. It does this through a college curriculum that amplifies and deepens the knowledge, skills and values imparted to students in the nine knowledge areas of the Common Core, and by offering students the opportunity to develop specialized knowledge and skills in a variety of undergraduate majors and minors. The College of Business Administration extends the student's core experiences, and focuses on further learning in pursuit of a specialized degree.

SPECIFIC KNOWLEDGE WITHIN THE MAJOR

The second element focuses on knowledge of the student’s major. This portion of the curriculum focuses on specific business knowledge and provides the foundation for a career as a business leader. Our core and major courses provide each student with an introduction to the various functions generic to an organization such as accounting, marketing, finance, and management. It also stresses development of a clear understanding of the dynamics of the firm and the economy, the basic managerial and organizational concepts necessary to function in an organization, the interaction between a firm and its environment, and an overall view of policy making within an organization. Building on this core, the curriculum provides students an opportunity to major in a specific business area, such as accounting, economics, finance, marketing or management. Our program prepares graduates for entry-level business positions -- the start of their business careers.

SKILL BUILDING

Third, the curriculum stresses skill building, helping students develop their personal and professional potential and allowing them to grow into leadership roles as their careers progress. In additional to the knowledge development of one’s business major, the building of skills in areas such as communication, analytical abilities, and ethical thinking is an integral part of the curriculum throughout a student's program of study. The development of these skills prepares graduates to continue to grow and develop in a rapidly changing work environment.

INTERNSHIPS

The Luter School is dedicated to assisting students interested in business internships.  Some internships are eligible for academic credit depending on the knowledge, skills and experience the position requires.  Typically, our internship opportunities require a minimum of 69 completed hours.  Internships are available throughout the academic year as well as during the summer.  We offer a broad range of internship opportunities that allow our students to gain experience in corporate, governmental and/or entrepreneurial positions.  Below are representative samples of intern positions and employers from past years:
