Back to top - One of the most important things that employers want to see when considering a graduate is experience in the field. An internship gives you the opportunity to gain some skills, exposure and maturity while in the field. It can also help you decide if that field is right for you. For example, being a doctor sounds great but you might find you are extremely squeamish around blood.
Back to top - No. Internships are the place where you gain experience, so it is normally easier to land an internship with no experience.
Back to top - It depends. Some companies will pay their interns and others will not—it depends on the needs resources of the company. If you are not getting paid for your internship, you should expect to be able to work out a compromise to get school credit for your time.
Back to top - Internships can be either full or part-time. If you are interning during the school year, you can expect an internship that is part-time. Many summer internships can be full-time opportunities which give you the experience of being in a full-time job with that organization.
Back to top - Yes, but you need to speak with your academic department before beginning your internship to work out the requirements.
Back to top - Internships are offered throughout the year. Many students participate in summer internships, but there are also internships that happen during the fall and spring semesters.
Back to top - For the summer, start in the fall and keep looking through the spring. A good rule of thumb is to start looking at least 1 semester in advance. Make sure that you use your personal network, especially during breaks!
