  • Be Proactive. Start your search at least a semester in advance
  • Visit our office to view the internships that we have listed
  • Meet with a Career Coach to discuss your needs and brainstorm leads on possible internships
  • Visit Career Connect to begin your search!

Feel free to browse and give us a call at 757-594-8887 or email for more information.

  2. One of the most important things that employers want to see when considering a graduate is experience in the field. An internship gives you the opportunity to gain some skills, exposure and maturity while in the field. It can also help you decide if that field is right for you. For example, being a doctor sounds great but you might find you are extremely squeamish around blood.

  3. No. Internships are the place where you gain experience, so it is normally easier to land an internship with no experience.

  4. It depends. Some companies will pay their interns and others will not—it depends on the needs resources of the company. If you are not getting paid for your internship, you should expect to be able to work out a compromise to get school credit for your time.

  5. Internships can be either full or part-time. If you are interning during the school year, you can expect an internship that is part-time. Many summer internships can be full-time opportunities which give you the experience of being in a full-time job with that organization.

  6. Yes, but you need to speak with your academic department before beginning your internship to work out the requirements.

  7. Internships are offered throughout the year. Many students participate in summer internships, but there are also internships that happen during the fall and spring semesters.

  8. For the summer, start in the fall and keep looking through the spring. A good rule of thumb is to start looking at least 1 semester in advance. Make sure that you use your personal network, especially during breaks!

  10. This varies by employer, but there are a few things that are usually consistent:
    • Your resume
    • A cover letter
    • An application
It is important to check with the internship provider to be sure of what is needed to apply for the internship. If you need any help writing your resume or cover letter, feel free to schedule an appointment with us.

  11. Schedule an appointment and come in to see us! You can do this by calling the office at 757-594-8887. You also may:
    • Explore company websites to see what internships they are offering. These are usually listed under headings like “recruitment” or “employment".
