For Parents
The Society for Adolescent Medicine recently released The Healthy Student -- A Parent's Guide to Preparing Teens for the College Years ( , new window) by Lawrence Neinstein, MD (University of Southern California). The guide covers confidentiality issues, the pre-college health exam, immunizations, health insurance, medical records and prescriptions, and first-aid supplies. Another widely acclaimed book is Don't Tell Me What To Do, Just Send Money: The Essential Parenting Guide to the College Years, co-authored byHelen E. Our office also has some online health information to help students care for themselves at college.
Important information to review before you arrive
| Transportation to off-campus medical sites |
Students are responsible for their own transportation to off-campus medical sites, such as dentists, physicians, and urgent care centers. Be prepared by having emergency funds available for taxi fares. Please know that university policy prohibits faculty, staff, RAs, and resident hall directors from transporting students. Call the student clinic for more information regarding transportation: (757) 594-7661.

We hope you have a healthy year, but should you become ill, please make sure you are prepared to know how you will access medical care should you need a physician or need to have prescriptions filled. Bring your insurance card (or a copy of it) with you. University health insurance is available through the Office of Student Life at (757) 594-7260. Insurance Checklist >> |

| Permanent and/or Temporary Disability |
If you have a documented disability that requires special assistance, please contact Mrs. Deborah Witt, Disability Services Coordinator at (757) 594-8763 or dwitt@cnu.edu. The Disability Services website may help answer some of your questions.
To further insure support, we strongly encourage that you communicate your needs to your residence hall
director, resident assistant, roommates and professors. |

 |
| Prescription Medications |
If you take prescription medications, be prepared for how you will have them refilled while in school. We suggest bringing a first aid kit including the common over-the-counter medications that you presently use. The UHWS nurse practitioner and physicians may also write perscriptions. If you are on a psychotropic medication, the nurse practitioner may write refill perscriptions. |
| |
|
| Controlled Substances |
Your prescription medications that are controlled substances are your responsibility for managing. Please take some time prior to arriving in the residence hall to plan for how you will safeguard these often stolen and abused medications. The student clinic does not keep controlled substances in the clinic. |
| |
|
| Injection Dependent Students |
If you require insulin or other prescription injections, you are required by the University to obtain a sharps container from the student clinic. When it becomes full, you are then required to return it to the Science Building. |
| |
 |
| Allergy Shots |
Because of safety and liability issues, no allergy shots are given in the office. Students are urged to contact their insurance company to find out which medical facilities they are authorized to receive them in. There are several local family physicians who can administer allergy shots, after an initial evaluation visit. Please contact the office of UHWS for further assistance and more detailed information.

| Medical Excuses |
Excuse notes are strongly discouraged as it is a student's responsibility to communicate with faculty, staff and coaches regarding absence from classes/athletics/work.
However, if an excuse note is requested, UHWS will provide documentation of your visit for you to share with whomever you choose. Under the Federal Government's Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act that was made into law in 1996, your visit to UHWS and the circumstances regarding it are strictly confidential. Without your written consent, information about your visit to UHWS may not be shared with anyone, including parents, faculty, staff, or coaches.
Please be aware that a documentation of your visit does not exclude you from your class, athletic, or work responsibilities. We strongly encourage you to maintain good communication with your professors, coaches and employers. |
