Cary B. EpesCNU Distinguished Alumnus of the Year
Cary B. Epes '77, Executive Vice President and Chief Lending Officer for The Old Point National Bank in Hampton, will be honored with the Distinguished Alumnus of the Year Award at Christopher Newport University's 76th Commencement Exercises. This is the highest honor awarded by the Alumni Society Board of Directors.

Serving Their Country
CNU will graduate and commission eight new officers in the United States Army on Saturday during commencement.

• Jeremiah Davis (Lynchburg, Va.) Air Defense at Fort Hood, Tex.
• Christopher Franklin (Stafford, Va.) and Nathaniel Naumann (Charlottesville, Va.) Infantry at Fort Benning, Ga.
• Michael Huber (Virginia Beach, Va.) Armor Division at Fort Knox, Ky.
• Martin Leopard (Spotsylvania, Va.) Military Police and Joseph Schultz (Newport News, Va.) Chemical Corps, both at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo.
• Jared L. Powell (Newport News, Va.) Field Artillery at Fort Sill, Okla.
Jesse E. Smith (Lorton, Va.) Medical Service Corps at Fort Sam Houston, Tex.

As part of the Annual Fund for Academic Excellence, student callers contact alumni, friends, parents and members of the senior class to raise funds and update information. These 10 students surpassed the goal of raising $147,750 for the Annual Fund this year by reaching $149,767. Gifts to the Annual Fund for Academic Excellence support critical needs as they arise on campus, emergency student loans, library books, scholarships, student leadership programs and more.

Rookie Golfer of the Year
CNU freshman golfer, Josh Meador, was named the USA South Athletic Conference Rookie of the Year.   Meador, from Mechanicsville, Va., finished the year with a scoring average of 77.05.

Sailing Places Sixth
CNU's sailing team finished sixth out of the 13 teams in the Buckeye Intersectional hosted by Ohio State. The Captains squad was one of only two Division III schools participating in an event dominated by Big 10 Division I schools.

Commencement
On May 8, CNU will award degrees to more than 500 graduates before an expected crowd of 7,000 at the 76th Commencement Ceremony. View the schedule of events and other important information.

Freshman Orientation
Setting Sail, CNU's freshman orientation program, kicks off on June 17, with five two-day sessions planned for 1,300 incoming first-year students. Read more.

Special Recognition

Fine Arts Students Receive Awards
CNU Fine Arts students won four of the seven award categories during the recent juried college exhibition, "Genesis," at the Peninsula Fine Arts Center. Top honors, the $500 Mayor's Art Award, went to Chad Hill for his work "The Walk to Golgotha."

Honors Research Scholarships
Chanelle Layman and Whitney Carroll have been selected as the recipients of the Honors Program $1,000 summer research scholarships. Layman will travel to Guatemala for a study of the long-term effects of bilingualism and biculturalism on the Tzutujil people of Santiago. Carroll's research focuses on a study of greenhouse gas emissions within the discontinuous permafrost zone of northern Alberta, Canada. 

Psychology Presentations
The Department of Psychology presented 30 papers, symposia or session chairs at the Eastern Psychological Association Conference with 51 students listed as co-authors. Seven psychology students were listed as co-authors on three papers presented at the Conference on Human Development.

TheaterCNU Students Compete
Amanda Gagnon, Bryan Wakefield, Caryn May, Greg Poljacik, Denise Santomauro and Nick Childress traveled to Birmingham, Ala., to participate in the Kennedy Center's American College Theater Festival Regional Irene Ryan competition. Amanda Gagnon and Bryan Wakefield were selected to compete among the top 16 finalists.
