Federal Work Study (FWS) is a program which provides employment for undergraduate students demonstrating exceptional financial need.

Through the program, students earn money to help pay for college expenses.

Under FWS, students are placed in various positions on campus.  Some students work in administrative offices, such as Admissions or Financial Aid, while other students are employed in locations such as the Freeman Center.  Once placed in the position, the student and his or her supervisor work out a schedule, taking into consideration the student's classes.  A student may work no more than 20 hours per week, and he or she may not work more than their scheduled award.  The average award is for approximately 10 hours a week.

Application Process:
  • Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).  Indicate on the FAFSA your interest in the Federal Work Study program.
  • Meet the Priority Consideration Date of March 1.
  • If you qualify for FWS, you will be notified through the award letter.  FWS is a need based program, so not all students will be eligible for work-study even if they indicated their interest in it.  The school offers on campus employment to students who may not be eligible for FWS.
  • Return the award letter to CNU and indicate your acceptance of FWS.  You must also complete and return the Background Information Request form sent with your award letter.
  • Late in the summer, you will receive a packet in the mail indicating your placement in a CNU office.  You will need to contact your supervisor and arrange for an interview, to ensure that the position will be mutually beneficial for you and your employer.
  • You will need to provide documentation of your eligibility to work to the Office of Human Resources prior to beginning your employment.  Other forms may also need to be completed.
  • Students record their time and submit timesheets to their supervisors bi-weekly.  Timesheets must be turned in on a timely basis to ensure students are paid appropriately.
Special Notes:
  • Students usually begin work at the minimum wage, but may be paid more based on experience or increased responsibility.  Your supervisor will set your pay rate.
  • FWS funds are not used as a credit towards tuition.  FWS is a work program. Students are paid twice a month by the Payroll Office.  Wages earned through the program can be used towards living expenses or school supplies.
  • Students who have not participated in FWS in prior years but who are interested in the program will be considered on a case-by-case basis.  FWS funds are based on Congressional allocations, and funds are limited.
  • On-campus employment is also available from the Office of Career Services for students who do not qualify for FWS.  Contact their office for more information.
