Virginia Sickness and Disability Plan (VSDP)

After the first year anniversary with the University, Classified employees are automatically enrolled in the Virginia Sickness and Disability Plan (VSDP). This plan is paid for by Christopher Newport University and allows certain short and long term disability benefits based on your number of years of state service. For more information, please review the Virginia Sickness & Disability Program Handbook.

After the first year anniversary with the University, Faculty members who select Virginia Retirement System (VRS) as their retirement plan are automatically enrolled after their first year anniversary in the Virginia Sickness and Disability Plan (VSDP). This plan is paid for by Christopher Newport University and allows certain short and long term disability benefits based on your number of years of state service. For more information review the Virginia Sickness & Disability Program Handbook.


Unum – Long Term Disability

Christopher Newport University also offers UNUM long term disability plan through Unum Provident Insurance Company for non-VSDP employees.  There is an employee paid premium that is based on the amount of coverage, determined by your salary and your age.  Those faculty who elect the Optional Retirement Plan (ORP) should carefully consider enrolling in this coverage given the ORP plans do not have long term disability benefits.

Long-term care programs provide help with everyday life tasks because of a prolonged health problem or following a major illness, injury or surgery. VRS administers the Virginia Sickness and Disability Program (VSDP) Long-Term Care Plan and the Commonwealth of Virginia (COV) Voluntary Group Long Term Care Insurance Program
