About Us

Academic Computing at Christopher Newport University supports instructional and research activities by providing access to classroom technologies, online course tools, hands-on faculty support, and faculty development in the area of instructional design and technology.

These services are provided through various initiatives and service-units.

The Faculty Technology Development sessions, are a part of a university-wide commitment to support efforts aimed at enhancing teaching, learning, and scholarship at CNU through the effective use of technology.

This investment includes:
  • Providing faculty with information on best practices in the use of instructional technology to foster student scholarship in both their physical and electronic teaching environments.
  • Providing faculty an interdisciplinary meeting point to present and discuss a wide range of topics including local successes in instructional technology implementations, collaborative initiatives, classroom safety systems, and our expanding technology services.
  • Providing workshops on various university systems.
The Faculty Support Center, 117 Ratcliffe, provides faculty a gathering place to receive help from technical experts as well as peer mentors. The Center acts as the physical front door to Academic Computing and provides access to several foundation support elements:
  • Help producing various course materials by phone, walk-in, or appointment.
  • Consulting on a wide range of instructional design/instructional technology concerns.
  • Access to equipment loan program including laptops and various classroom technologies.
  • One-on-one help with university academic computing systems.

Scholar Course Support provides back-end support for the Scholar course management system powered by Blackboard.
  • Performs regular system updates and system maintenance.
  • On-site system administration, including Building Block installation and settings enhancements as requested by ATAC.

Classroom Technology Support develops and maintains instructional spaces containing computer and A/V equipment in all ITS supported classrooms.
  • Maintaining instructor stations and all other audio visual equipment in all ITS supported classrooms.
  • Consulting services for individuals and groups interested in deploying new technology in the classroom.
  • Just-in-time support to classrooms managed by ITS.
  • Coordinate regular classroom technology diagnostic and maintenance events.
