Answers:
1. What is a Learning Community (LC)?
A LC is a group of 15-30 students who take between two and four classes together and build strong relationships within their community. Students in most LCs not only take classes together, but also live in close proximity to each other. All freshmen will select a LC through the Admitted Student System once they have been offered admission. Back to Top
2. Why does CNU have Learning Communities (LCs)?
- The LC makes CNU more learning-friendly. Instead of having four or five classes with different students in each class, you will have friends in two, three or four of your classes.
- We have selected great courses with great instructors for inclusion in our LCs. All courses in the LCs satisfy CNU's Liberal Learning Curriculum requirements, so these course combinations will work well for most students. You simply need to find the course combinations that are most interesting to you or most appropriate for your intended area of academic interest.
- You have guaranteed registration in the courses that are part of the LC, as long as you choose the best LC for your situation. The courses in each LC are selected to form a schedule with ideal days and times.
All of these advantages work together to give you a great academic start and a great living/learning experience during your first year at CNU. Back to Top
3. How do I choose a LC that is good for me?
Within the Admitted Student System, you will be given different LCs to choose from. These LCs have been selected for you based upon your area of academic interest and your profile. Each option is a good fit for you. If you have not determined an area of academic interest, we have LCs that incorporate courses from the Liberal Learning Core Curriculum that will help you explore different areas. Back to Top
4. I am planning to take AP exams, but I don't know my scores yet. What should I do about selecting my LC?
When you answer questions that determine your profile, we ask you to indicate the AP, IB, or dual enrollment credit you expect. No matter what LC you choose, the Registrar will use this information to make sure you have an appropriate LC. Once CNU receives your credit, we will adjust your LC, if necessary. Back to Top
5. I have been invited to join the Honors program. Which LC would be good for me?

6. I am a PLP student. Which LC would be good for me?

8. I am on one of CNU's NCAA athletic teams. Which LC should I choose?
We have several LCs that work for athletes. If you do not choose one of those LCs, we will make sure you are in an LC that allows for athletic practice and works for your area of academic interest. Back to Top
9. What should I do to maximize my chances of being in the LC I want?
Register for Setting Sail (orientation) and the LC as early in the spring as you can. The earlier you register, the more choices you will have. Back to Top
10. How do I reserve space in a LC?
This is completed through the Admitted Student System once a student has been offered admission. Back to Top
11. After I've chosen my LC, may I also request a specific roommate?
At CNU, all first-year students are in a learning community because we know the positive impact they have on students' success. You will submit your preferred LC and roommate at the same time and we will do our best to accommodate these requests whenever possible. Yet, LCs and the curriculum take priority over roommate requests because we want you to succeed inside and outside the classroom. Back to Top
12. If I select a LC now, can I drop the LC and select another at Setting Sail?
Once you select your LC, you will not be able to log back into the Admitted Student System to enter a different choice. Feel confident that we will consider your area of academic interest, your LC choice, and other interests you share with us to ensure that you are enrolled in an appropriate LC and off to a great start at CNU!
