Purpose of Interlibrary Loan
Interlibrary Loan (ILL) is a free library service that allows eligible CNU faculty, staff and students to request items not available at the Paul and Rosemary Trible Library from other libraries.

Eligible Users
Current students, faculty and staff of CNU are eligible to use ILL services. We regret that we cannot offer this service to our community patrons. Please check with your local public library for ILL services.
Undergraduate students are limited to 10 requests per week. Graduate students are limited to 20 requests per week.

Types of Requests
ILL will send a request for most any type of material: books, journal articles, dissertations, etc. However, please be aware that many libraries do not lend rare books, reference books, audiovisual items, computer software and microforms. Also, a dissertation/thesis is usually only available through ILL at the college or university where it was published and may only be lent if the school has a circulating copy. NOTE: If you find a citation on the Dissertation Abstracts database, you will be making a LOAN request for the dissertation title. The citation you are looking at on the screen IS the abstract. Also Note: ILL participates in Dissertation Express. We are able to purchase select dissertations for a discount on your behalf. Please email us if you are interested and want more information.

Important Information
Remember to check the library’s online catalog for CNU book and media holdings at: http://read.cnu.edu and
check JournalFinder for CNU journal holdings.
The Trible Library will not place requests for items owned by this library, including currently checked-out items, unless a library staff member has deemed the item missing. Note: if a library staff member has deemed a book missing, please indicate that on your request.

How to Submit Your Request
Check these two places before submitting your request (making sure what you need is not in the Trible Library).
If the material is not available in the Trible Library, use ILLiad to place an ILL request for the item. To do this, you must first register with ILLiad, the automated Interlibrary Loan system. Register only once. After you have registered, logon to your account and click on the type of item you would like to request (i.e. book, chapter, article, etc.).
It is very important to include as much information on the request form as possible, including the source of the citation (the book, online database, etc. where you saw it referenced).
For journal articles, do not abbreviate the journal title unless the citation only includes the abbreviated title. If available, please include the International Standard Serial Number (ISSN), i.e. 0000-0000, for all journal requests to speed request processing.

Delivery
Please allow an average of two weeks for books and one week for journal articles to be delivered. These are estimates, as delivery can depend on the location the item is coming from. Please plan accordingly. We are currently using e-mail (or phone if you prefer) to notify patrons that their ILL items are available for pick-up. If you do not have an e-mail address, we will contact you by telephone. Items are to be picked up at the library's circulation desk on the first floor.

Status Check
If more than two weeks have passed since you submitted your request and you have not either heard from us or received anything, please feel free to contact this office by phone at 757-594-7249 or by email at ill@cnu.edu. We will be happy to check the status of your request and let you know what to expect.
You can also check the status of your request by logging into ILLiad and clicking on "Outstanding Requests" or "Checked Out Items." When your requested item is available, you will receive an email letting you know that you can pick it up at the Circulation Desk or giving you instructions to view the requested article online. You can also see the history of items you have requested by clicking on "History Requests" on the main menu of your account in ILLiad.
If the request has come back unfilled, the status of your item will say "awaiting unfilled processing." Check the status periodically, and if unfilled and you still need this item, resubmit the request for possible further searching.
Other status conditions and their meanings include:
Submitted/Awaiting Request Processing - Request has been sent to ILL to process
Request Sent - Request has been submitted to other libraries.
Awaiting Unfilled - Item has come back to us unfilled or has been canceled. See item's record for details.

Recalls
Any item borrowed through interlibrary loan is subject to recall at any time. If you are notified that an item you have borrowed has been recalled, you must return it immediately. We will help you obtain another copy, if necessary.

Loan Policy & Renewal Requests
Each lending library has its own loan period and renewal policy. Loan periods range from 2-8 weeks. Most lenders will lend items for at least 30 days. We must abide by the loan period and any restrictions placed on the loan by the lending library, such as No Copying (a copyright restriction) or Library Use Only (item MUST stay in the Trible Library--patron cannot take out of this building) or No Renewals. Some libraries allow renewals, so please make your renewal request one week BEFORE the due date. Please contact the ILL office (by visiting, by phone at 757-594-7249, or by email) if you need the item longer. Overdue items will not be renewed.

Overdue/Lost/Damaged Items
ILL service depends upon the good will of other libraries. Failure to return ILL books on time jeopardizes our future borrowing privileges. ILL items are due back on or before the due date on the item’s attached book band.
We send e-mail overdue ILL notifications (or call if there is no e-mail address) to our patrons. If the item in question is not returned by the second overdue notice, your ILL borrowing privileges will be suspended and your CNU student account will be blocked until the item is either returned or you pay the replacement cost which is determined by the lending library. If you lose or damage an ILL item, please contact this office immediately. We will contact the lending library for information on payment for damages or for the replacement cost.
You are responsible for any damages or loss to any item you borrow through ILL from the time you pick it up here until it is returned to the Trible Library. Please contact this office if you have any questions or concerns. (by visiting, by phone at 757-594-7249, or by email)

Alternatives to Interlibrary Loan
Trible Library has many online subscriptions to journals with full-text articles. They are accessible through JournalFinder and the Trible Library homepage on the web. Please check with the Reference Department if you have questions. The Trible Library also belongs to the Virginia Tidewater Consortium, a local consortium group with other college libraries in the area. Members of the consortium allow borrowing privileges between libraries. You may apply for a consortium card at the Trible Library Circulation Desk. With this card and your CNU ID, you can borrow books from the other libraries in the consortium. Another alternative is to check these local public libraries and take advantage of their collections.

Copyright Restrictions
U.S. Copyright law [Title 17, U.S. Code] limits the number of photocopied articles the Library may obtain through ILL. Copyright restrictions apply to journals published within the last five years. This library can request no more than five articles (total per library--not per person) from the same journal title published during the previous five years, in a single calendar year. CNU strictly abides by the copyright regulations. If we reject your request for this reason, we can suggest you try your local public library and/or we will let you know of any local libraries which own the journal in question.

Study Abroad ILL Privileges
CNU students studying abroad are allowed to use ILLiad for articles and book chapters that can be delivered electronically. Requests for loans of books and media items are unable to be filled.
