"The mediocre teacher tells. The good teacher explains. The superior teacher demonstrates. The great teacher inspires."

At CNU, we know that good teachers make a difference. That's why we're dedicated to helping you succeed in becoming the best teacher you can possibly be. With faculty from twelve departments to help prepare you, and a partnership with award-winning Newport News Schools for field experiences, graduates of CNU's teacher preparation program are among the finest in the state.
Why should I do a graduate program in teaching?
Earning a graduate degree can add additional money to your salary. And, for students enrolled as undergraduates at CNU, the graduate program can be completed in only one additional year, instead of the two years frequently required for most master's degrees.
Why should I do my program at CNU?
The CNU program has several hallmarks:
- a dedicated faculty across 12 departments who administer and teach for the program
- a partnership with an award winning school district, Newport News Public Schools that provides rich field experiences
- an opportunity to have paid employment during the fall semester of the professional (5th) year
- an active student organization, the SVEA, that includes four past state presidents
- a fully-accredited program with excellent program evaluation results
How else will I benefit?
Our goals for you, as graduates of our program, are becoming highly qualified teachers who can--
- plan and prepare for instruction based on knowledge of content, resources, and students;
- create a safe, orderly, and nurturing environment that creates high expectations for all, while recognizing and respecting diversity;
- deliver and assess instruction to meet state-mandated and district objectives, adjusting your methods as needed to engage and teach every child; and
- demonstrate professional responsibilities of dress, collegial behaviors, engagement of families, administrative duties, and self-directed growth.
