What is it?

The Mathematics Computer Laboratory, located in Gosnold Hall room 114, is a student working area with 20 eMac and 7 iMac computers. The computers are loaded with mathematics software, such as Maple, Matlab, Statdisk, and mathematics education software, as well as standard office sofware, such as Microsoft Word, Excel, and Powerpoint.

Who can use the Computer lab and when is it open?

The mathematics computer laboratory is open to all CNU students Monday-Friday, 8:00 AM - 10:00 PM, during the fall and spring semesters. Students who are using the computers for mathematics projects have priority for use of the computers in the lab. Students enrolled in mathematics courses at CNU may also use the lab Monday-Friday, 10:00 PM - 12:00 midnight, and Saturday and Sunday, 9:00 AM - 12:00 midnight, but they must have an after-hours laboratory pass and a CNU student ID in their possession. After-hours passes that are valid for an entire semester can be obtained from the mathematics department secretary in Gosnold Hall room 201 Monday-Friday, 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM.

Can I get help using Maple?

Sean Hubbard, the computer lab assistant, is available to help students using the Maple mathematics computing program according to the schedule below:

TUESDAY 8:00 - 11:00 AM
WEDNESDAY 2:00 - 4:00 PM
THURSDAY 8:00 - 11:00 AM
2:30 - 3:30 PM

Laboratory Rules

  • Students using the computers for mathematics projects have priority over all others.
  • No game playing.
  • No shouting or yelling. The math tutoring lab is in the same room!

Diskettes and Printers

You should bring a floppy disk with you when you use the lab in order to save your work. The computers are periodically "cleaned", so if you save your work to the computer's hard drive, it may be gone when you return!

To print to the printer in the lab, the computer you are working on must be set to print to the "hp LaserJet 4200". If not, your work will be printed somewhere else in Gosnold Hall! If the printer is out of paper, ask the Maple assistant or Professor Gallo in room 114A for assistance. If neither of these are available, see the department secretary, Mrs. Cervi, in room 201.

Want to be a paid Maple Assistant?

If you are an outgoing person who would enjoy showing others how to work with computers, satisfactorily completed MATH 140 and 240, and were pretty good at using the Maple mathematics program, you might want to be a Maple assistant in the computer lab. In addition to helping students use the Maple program, the Maple assistant helps maintain the computers and printer. If you are interested, see Professor Gallo or e-mail him at jgallo@cnu.edu.

If you have any suggestions for improving the mathematics laboratory,
please see Professor Gallo or e-mail him at jgallo@cnu.edu.
