Math Club
The Math Club, open to all interested students, meets weekly in the math student lounge in Gosnold 114. This student-run organization is sponsored by faculty member Dr. Christopher Kennedy. Among other activities, the club plans social events such as tailgating parties at Homecoming, sells CNU Math T-shirts and attends conferences. Club president for the 2011-2012 academic year is Ashley Marzzarella.
The CNU Math Club is on Facebook.
Math Lab Tutoring
If you enjoy helping others with math problems or if you have some expertise in using Maple software, you may want to consider working as a paid tutor. Applications for Maple tutor/lab assistant positions are available from the department secretary in Gosnold 201 or Dr. Jeanne Nailor in Gosnold 211.
To work as a Maple tutor/lab assistant, you must have successfully completed two semesters of calculus and have demonstrated facility in using Maple software.
Pi Mu Epsilon
Pi Mu Epsilon is a national honor society dedicated to the promotion of mathematics and recognition of students who successfully pursue mathematical understanding. Christopher Newport University is home to the Virginia Mu chapter of PME. Professor Ron Persky is our faculty liaison. Outstanding CNU math students may be eligible for membership. The PME Constitution describes eligible students as follows:
Eligible undergraduates are those who have completed at least the equivalent of two semesters of calculus
and two additional courses in mathematics, at or above the calculus level, all of which lead to the fulfillment
of the requirements for a major in the mathematical sciences. In addition, such students must have maintained
a grade point average equivalent to that of at least 3.0 on a 4-point scale, both for all courses that lead to
fulfillment of requirements for a major in the mathematical sciences, and also for all courses that lead to
fulfillment of requirements for an undergraduate degree.
Internships and Research Opportunities
CNU's location on the Virginia Peninsula provides students with opportunities to gain valuable work experience with prestigious employers while earning their math degrees. Internships are available with nearby NASA-Langley Research Center in Hampton and with Northrop-Grumman and Jefferson Lab in Newport News among others. In their junior and senior years, CNU math students work closely with their professors on independent projects.
