All CNU graduates are required to fulfill the Mathematical Literacy component (six credit hours) of the Liberal Learning Core Curriculum. Any courses above MATH 110 (College Algebra) may be used to satisfy this requirement. Since some majors require specific mathematics courses, a student should consult the Undergraduate Catalog for the requirements of his/her major. Students who plan to take calculus but who are not ready to enroll in MATH 140 may choose between MATH 110 and 130 (Precalculus) to develop appropriate skills. Students who have had more advanced mathematics in high school or at another college should consult an advisor in the mathematics department to determine the appropriate mathematics level. Prospective students can determine if their AP, IB or Cambridge exam scores will earn CNU credit.

See the Undergraduate Catalog for more details.

Because planning a long-term program for students intending to major or minor in mathematics is complex, particularly for those intending to teach mathematics in Virginia secondary schools, students are required to consult with a mathematics department advisor before registering for any courses.

All students planning to pursue either the Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science degree in mathematics must satisfy the liberal learning curriculum as well as general requirements for graduation. In addition, the mathematics department requires the courses shown below. Students may have no more than two grades below C- in courses applied toward the major. See the Undergraduate Catalog (PDF) for more details.

1.  MATH 250, 260, 310, 360 and 370

2.  MATH 451 or MATH 499

3.  One 400-level math course (not including MATH 451 or 499)

4.  Nine additional credit hours in math at the 300-400 level, excluding MATH 301W and 308
