Applicants should bring sticks, mallets, and music. The university will provide instruments and stands unless the performer prefers to bring personal equipment.  All applicants must perform on snare drum, mallets and timpani.  Those who wish to perform on drum set may do so as well.  Sight-reading on any instrument may also be required.

SNARE DRUM

Rudiments: 40 Percussive Arts Society Rudiments (open-closed-open)

Concert-Style Solo:  A prepared piece or etude, memorization is not required.

Rudimental-Style Solo: A prepared piece or etude, memorization is not required.

MARIMBA / XYLOPHONE

Scales and Arpeggios: Perform 2-octave scales and arpeggios (major, harmonic minor and chromatic)

2-Mallet Solo: A prepared piece or etude, memorization is not required.

4-Mallet Solo: A prepared piece or etude, memorization is not required.

TIMPANI

Fundamentals: Demonstrate proficiency in tuning, tone production, muffling, and rolls.

Solo: A prepared piece or etude, memorization is not required. 

DRUM SET (optional)

Fundamentals: Demonstrate proficiency in rock, latin and jazz styles.

Solo: Alternate 4 bars "time" with 4 bars solo in 4/4.  Progress chronologically from early jazz to modern day.

ORCHESTRAL EXCERPTS (optional)

Perform standard orchestral excerpts on snare drum, mallets, timpani, and accessories.
