VCCS Course Recommendations / CNU Course Equivalent | Richard Bland College / CNU Course Equivalent
CNU has developed Articulation Agreements for guaranteed admission with the Virginia Community College System (VCCS). Additional information regarding guaranteed admission may be obtained from your community college representative.
Completion of a transfer-oriented (A.A., A.S., or A.A.&S.) associate degree from a Virginia community college will satisfy CNU lower-level Liberal Learning Core requirements. This does not include other program or graduation prerequisite requirements.
If you have been offered admission to CNU and have completed a university parallel program (Associate of Arts, Associate of Science, or the Associate of Arts & Sciences) at a VCCS college or Richard Bland College, you should anticipate the following:
- Courses, with a grade of "C" or better, that have a CNU equivalent will transfer;
- Courses completed in the VCCS with a grade of "C-" or lower will not transfer to CNU and must be repeated if it is a required course for your major at CNU;
- No more than 66 semester hours will transfer to CNU from a two-year college or university;
- To receive junior level class standing, if you present at least 60 hours of college level credit (not developmental or remedial course work);
- Completion of all lower-level Liberal Learning Core requirements, excluding graduation requirements, upper-level requirements, and concentration / minor / major requirements;
- To complete concentration (if applicable), minor, and major requirements in effect at CNU at the time of the student's first term of enrollment at CNU.
Entrance into CNU majors or fields of study is competitive. Acceptance into the University does not imply admission to these programs. Transfer students and currently enrolled CNU students are treated identically with regard to admission to competitive programs.
For more information, please contact Bonnie Tracey at transfer@cnu.edu.
Evaluations of Transfer Credit (including high school dual enrollment)
Evaluations are completed in the Office of Registrar after a student is admitted and commits to our offer of admission. The transfer credit evaluation is available via students' CNU Live access' (Note: Paper copies are available upon request.)
- Courses and credits from regionally accredited colleges and universities which are recognized by the American Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers (AACRAO) are generally accepted, provided that such credits carry a minimum grade of 'C' and are comparable to courses offered at CNU. Please note that credit is not awarded for courses in which a grade of 'C-' or lower were earned or for credit earned through departmental or institutional examination(s).
- Credit is not awarded for grades of 'no credit,' unsatisfactory,' or 'incomplete' or any other grade which indicates unsatisfactory progress or that a course has not been completed.
- Grades do not transfer; only the courses and the credits transfer.
- Non-transferable credit: Credit awarded at a previous transfer college or university for AP, CLEP, or remedial/developmental courses do not automatically transfer to CNU. AP and CLEP scores should be submitted directly to CNU from the Educational Testing Service of the College Board for evaluation. AP and CLEP scores are evaluated according to University policies in place at the time of your enrollment.
- A maximum of 66 semester hours may be transferred to CNU from a community college or two-year college. A maximum of 92 semester hours from a four-year college or university.
- Academic policy requires that the last 45 semester hours must be completed in residence with CNU.
- Incomplete transcripts: If a student's transcript was incomplete (listed courses without grades or listed courses as 'in progress') at the time of their advising appointment or registration, the student should bring a list of those courses in progress to the advising appointment. Students should avoid registering for those 'in progress' courses until the entire, official academic transcript has been received and evaluated by the Office of the Registrar.
- CNU degree holders must complete an additional 30 hours in residence for a second degree.
If you are a degree seeking students who leaves the University for a period of one full academic year or more, you are considered a readmit and must seek readmission. If offered readmission, one will be required to meet all Liberal Learning Curriculum, major, minor, and concentration requirements that are in effect per the University catalog when they are readmitted to Christopher Newport University.
Successful applicants generally have fulfilled general education requirements and have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0. Once admission decisions are finalized, letters of decision are mailed to all prospective students. All decisions are delivered in writing.
- To apply, you must submit an application for admission.
- All official college and university transcripts (partial transcripts and/or grade reports are required until final grades are posted), official high school transcript(s), and standardized test scores.*
