(NEWPORT NEWS, VA) – Christopher Newport University School of Business students have won first place in the Collegiate MAXI (Marketing Award for Excellence and Innovation) Competition sponsored by the Direct Marketing Association of Washington Educational Foundation. The Collegiate MAXI competition is an opportunity for students to turn theory into practice by developing a direct marketing campaign for an actual corporate sponsor.

This is the second consecutive year that CNU students have been selected the first-place winner. In addition to receiving the “GOLD” MAXI, the CNU student team will be awarded the Guy Yolton Award for Creative Direct Mail. This special certificate is awarded to the team that creates the best direct mail package. Both of these awards will be presented on May 5, 2005, at the DMAW Annual Conference in Washington, D.C.

“I am very proud of our CNU student team,” said Dr. Lisa Spiller, faculty advisor and marketing professor. “These students have an unbelievable work ethic. They created an outstanding marketing plan for the corporate sponsor. Unlike many other schools, our team did not earn credit, extra-credit or bonus points for their semester-long work on this project. That clearly speaks to the integrity of these four students." The CNU student team was comprised of William “Blake” Burnette, Brian Cotter, Nicole Hruska and Katie Vico.

The MAXI competition is the most prestigious, and coveted, marketing award offered in the mid-Atlantic region. It was established in 1993 by the DMAW Educational Foundation and has become both a symbol and a goal for bright and aspiring college students. Students from colleges across Virginia, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware and the District of Columbia compete in this annual competition.
