(NEWPORT NEWS, VA) – Christopher Newport University seniors Ashley Boyd of Chesapeake and Melissa Bell of Newport News have been chosen to participate in the Virginia Governor’s Fellows Program for the summer of 2005. Boyd and Bell were two of 15 chosen as Fellows this year in the state, out of approximately 70 applicants. “I’ve grown more and more involved in politics while at CNU,” said Boyd. “State government is a place where people can make a big difference.” To be considered for the Governor’s Fellows Program, applicants selected a bill and petitioned the Governor to sign it. Boyd’s selected bill sought to create a committee on civics and government education for K-12, while Bell wrote against a bill that would “make it hard for high school groups to promote gay tolerance.” Bell will be in the Department of Planning and Budget, while Boyd will serve the Governor’s Office through public policy and scheduling. Boyd and Bell both served as President of the CNU Student Government Association and attended the Sorenson Institute for Political Leaders College Leader's Program at the University of Virginia. They have also been largely involved in Virginia21, which involves young people across the Commonwealth in the political process by providing information, directing advocacy and coordinating political action on a non-partisan issue agenda. Founded in 1982, the prestigious Virginia Governor's Fellows Program offers a select group of outstanding and highly motivated persons the opportunity to experience firsthand the administration of state government in the Commonwealth. The Governor's Fellows Program brings new and creative ideas to state government and often leads students to careers in public service. Applicants must be college seniors or graduate or professional school students to apply for the program.
