(NEWPORT NEWS, VA)– Dr. Joseph F. Healey, professor of Sociology and chair of the Department of Sociology and Anthropology at Christopher Newport University, was awarded a Fulbright Scholar Program grant to teach courses in research methods and minority relations at Uzhorod National University in Uzhgorod, Ukraine. Healey is one of 800 U.S. faculty and professionals who will travel abroad to some 140 countries for the 2005-2006 academic year through the Fulbright Scholar Program. Healey is the first senior scholar to serve at Uzhorod on a lecturing grant, made possible by the U.S. Department of State and the Council for International Exchange of Scholars.
Healey earned his Ph.D. from the University of Virginia in Sociology and Anthropology, and his M.A. and B.A. from The College of William and Mary. A professor at CNU since 1974, he teaches courses in statistics, research methods and the sociology of race and gender. Healey has published seven books including “Statistics: A Tool for Social Research,” “Diversity and Society: Race, Ethnicity, and Gender,” and “Sociology for a New Word.” Healey has also written for scholarly journals and has presented original research on subjects ranging from Mexican laborers in the United States to the sociology of sports, reflecting his wide range of interests within the field of Sociology.
The Fulbright Program was created in 1946 by the United States Congress, immediately after World War II. The mission of the program is to build mutual understanding between people of the United States and other countries.
Recipients of Fulbright Scholar awards are selected on the basis of academic or professional achievement and because they have demonstrated extraordinary leadership potential in their fields. Among thousands of prominent U.S. Fulbright Scholar alumni are Milton Friedman, Nobel Laureate in Economics; James Watson, co-discoverer of the structure of DNA and Nobel Laureate in Medicine; Rita Dove, Pulitzer Prize-winning poet; and Craig Barrett, CEO of Intel Corporation.
