(NEWPORT NEWS, VA)– Three Christopher Newport University Sociology students took home honors for the posters they created as part of the PRAXIS Service Learning project. Each student spent 16 hours volunteering and then connected the topics they studied in sociology to their own identity formation, community and society.

The winners included:

  • First place: Kim Bradford “Let’s Blow the Whistle on Rape”
  • Second Place: Laura Kuhl “Giving Kids a Head Start”
  • Third Place: Elizabeth Stevens “Gray Matters"

Honorable Mention awards went to Christi Bagford, Stephanie Mutter, Kellie Howerton, Courtney Jones, and Allison Tanner.

The poster session was organized by Sociology professors Dr. Linda M. Waldron and Michael D. D. Willits with a goal to stimulate intellectual inquiry and foster social and civic values, while highlighting the PRAXIS program.

PRAXIS is a cooperative project of faculty, students, community service agencies and United Campus Ministries at Christopher Newport University (UCMCNU). Volunteers are required to participate in 16-20 hours of community service, participate in two reflection sessions and complete an evaluation form.
