Academic Excellence KATI E GLOVER ‘Go out and set the world on fire’ – words that are regularly said by President Trible are what made me choose to attend Christopher Newport. I have always felt this urge, a need, to go out and change the world. In fact, it was even incorporated into my high school senior quote. Because of this, I knew Christopher Newport was the place for me. During my time here I have been equipped with the knowledge and tools I need to go out and achieve just this. As a result, I am graduating college as a double major in political science and leadership with a minor in communication. I also studied abroad, expanding my knowledge on ancient history and classical studies. In the fall of 2021, I began law school.

From the moment you arrive at Christopher Newport, you’ll have the opportunity to integrate student learning through research and creative activity beyond the traditional classroom. It’s one of the best things you can do as a student, and will help open doors to any endeavor after you graduate. As undergraduates, students from every major enrich our campus with their creativity and action, and work directly with expert teacherscholars to create new knowledge and seek answers to great questions. Student work has led to peer-reviewed publications in notable journals, presentations at conferences both here and abroad, and performances across the country. Whatever field excites you, you’ll find a unique opportunity to explore it here.

Some of the best science and engineering facilities in the world are right in our backyard, such as the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility (Jefferson Lab) and NASA Langley Research Center. We’re also in the heart of one of the most historic regions in America, and our nation’s capital is just a few hours away.

SU M M E R S C H O L A RS Summer scholars are full-time, paid undergraduate research fellows. This program allows intellectually curious, motivated students to team with a professor on a compelling research question. The result is a community of scholars that promotes the collaborative nature of research, champions communication across disciplines and fosters discovery. Through this eightweek, in-residence experience, participants gain research and communication skills, learn more about the university’s scholarly resources, and become better problem solvers.

PAIDE IA CO NFE RE N CE Paideia is Christopher Newport’s annual conference dedicated to advancing important research across the liberal arts and sciences. Financial Aid Christopher Newport offers exceptional academics, stunning facilities and a vibrant campus life. Yet we recognize paying for college can be a challenge. That’s why we distribute nearly $50 million in aid to students each year. Most assistance comes in the form of federal and state grants, scholarships to reward merit and help students with financial need, educational loans, and college work-study programs.

APPLYING TO CNU We encourage students to apply to Christopher Newport as early as possible due to our selective admission standards. We anticipate receiving 8,000 applications for only 1,200 spaces in the fall freshman class.

Application Types

Application Review

EARLY DECI SI O N

When reviewing applications we consider each student’s academic grades and curriculum, with special attention given to honors, Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate or dual-enrollment courses. We also look for students who demonstrate leadership ability, a commitment to service and community involvement, exemplary talents, and diverse experiences. As part of the application review, Christopher Newport requires a personal statement or essay of no fewer than 250 words to learn more about you, your goals and ideas.

By applying Early Decision, you agree to enroll if offered admission. While you may apply to other colleges, you agree to withdraw all other applications if admitted. If you feel Christopher Newport is the right fit for you, applying Early Decision will give you the best chance for admission as it demonstrates your commitment to Christopher Newport, which we take into account when reviewing your application. EARLY AC T ION Early Action is a nonbinding option and great choice for students very interested in Christopher Newport but still considering other colleges. By applying Early Action a decision will be made long before the traditional spring notification date.

R E G U LA R DEC I SI ON Regular Decision is also nonbinding and provides the most time to submit your application. It has the latest notification date and is the most competitive. APPLI CATI O N DEADLINES

Credits for Advanced Placement (AP), International Baccalaureate (IB) and dual-enrollment are awarded for appropriate grades and test scores.

TEST O PTIO N A L

REQUIRED ACTI ONS

Christopher Newport was one of the first public universities in Virginia to offer test-optional admission over a decade ago, and many of our admission offers are made each year to students who choose not to submit standardized test scores. We made further concessions in 2020-21 to account for testing hardships by lifting the minimum GPA and rankin-class requirements for test-optional consideration. Our holistic review process takes many factors into consideration, and applying test-optional requires that we place more emphasis on other credentials. Many students still choose to submit standardized test scores from the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT), American College Test (ACT) and/or the Classic Learning Test (CLT) to bolster their admission and scholarship applications.

A DMISSIO N IN T ERVIEWS We strongly encourage interviews for all high school seniors who plan to apply. This personal interaction is an important part of the application process. It is a great way to enhance your admission application and receive a personalized introduction to Christopher Newport. We want to meet you one-on-one to learn about you — your qualities, experiences and goals we can’t discern from your test scores or GPA. An interview is required for Honors and PLP applicants. Preference for those programs is given to those who interview by the December 15 priority deadline.
