A Word of Welcome from the Director of the Writing Center, Professor Jessica Clark
Who we are: The Alice F. Randall Writing Center is open to students from across the curriculum who want to improve their writing. Our consultants, CNU students who have completed a three-credit Writing Center practicum, are ready to assist their peers in a variety of writing tasks, from sociology papers and biology lab reports to history research projects and English critiques. Writing consultants can help at all stages of the writing process, from generating ideas to developing and polishing later drafts; we can guide writers at all skill levels as well as those who have special needs, including students for whom English is a second language. Please note that we are not a proofreading service; we try to help students identify and correct problems in their own work, but we are predominately a place where writers can come to talk about writing. Students may make 30- to 45-minute appointments by calling the Center (594-7684) or dropping by Ratcliffe 110 and signing up; we also take walk-ins on a space-available basis. This year, we will also be able to provide on-line consulting to students who are unable to come to campus for an appointment. Additionally, we provide consultation feedback that, at your student's request, will be forwarded to you.

Resources: The Center has an extensive library of handouts, handbooks, workbooks, dictionaries and reference books-including resources for non-native English writers-available to both students and faculty. Our web site www.cnu.edu/wcenter/index.htm provides links to on-line handouts and will be continually upgraded to include access to other sites and services that writers may find useful. You may also find some helpful links below, including the Revision Guide for Writing Assignments prepared by CNU faculty during Chris Anson's recent campus workshop. Instructor Links

The Center is also equipped with computers if students wish to work on their writing projects at the Center.

Workshops: In addition to individual consultations, we will offer a series of workshops throughout the year on essay development, grammar, punctuation and documentation form; topics may include "The Six Deadly Sins" (common grammar and punctuation errors), "International English" (ESL trouble spots), "Back to the Basics" (paragraph and essay structure), "Writing with Style" (sentence construction) and "Mastering the MLA" (documentation form). Watch for flyers and email announcing schedules. You may also request that a Writing Consultant visit your class to make a special workshop presentation to your students. To schedule one of these presentations, please call (594-7284) or email Dr. Jessica Clark, Writing Center Director.

Classroom Visits, Brochures and Bookmarks: Writing Center consultants are happy to visit individual classrooms to discuss our services with your students. To schedule a visit (average length: 10-15 minutes), please call or email me. We need to know the course, the location, and the time you'd like our consultant to visit. Bookmarks advertising our hours and services are available from the Center if you'd like a supply to distribute to your students

Recruiting: Because we are a peer consulting service, we rely on the recommendations of CNU faculty to recruit our staff. If you know a good student writer who might be interested in taking the Writing Center practicum (from which we hire our consultants), please let me know.

Questions/Comments: Don't hesitate to email, call (594-7684) or drop by my office (Ratcliffe 230) with your suggestions! I look forward to working with you.

Jessica Clark, Ph.D.
